Candidate safety takes priority
Independents are forced to print a contactable address on election material. After threats, I will not treat that as a reasonable ask. Safety takes precedence over the current rule.
As an independent candidate you have to provide a residential address or an address where you can be easily contacted on election material.
There are so many candidates out there that have experienced threats of violence or death threats, and a lot of the time the public don’t actually know that this is going on, but it is quite common.
Independent MLC Meg Webb has said this is a valid concern and a matter to consider from a safety perspective. The Joint Standing Committee is looking at some of these issues.
I’m thankful for the support from LGAT, Tasmanians, many candidates and councillors who are all deeply concerned and want change now.
Our safety takes precedence over legislation and I will not be abiding the current legislation irrespective of repercussions. I look forward to a statement from the government.
